Call for Street Mural Artists

Media Borough invites all Media-area artists 21 and older to submit a design for a street mural at the intersection of Third and Monroe Streets in Media.

This will be Media Borough’s second street mural, co-sponsored by the Borough, Media Arts Council and Transition Town Media. The first mural was installed at the intersection of Third and Jackson Streets last fall—we encourage applicants to take a look at it and at this year’s location before submitting. Painting the street mural will be a community event, scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 2022 (Rain Date: Saturday, May 21, 2022).

Both murals are recommendations of the 2020 Media Traffic Calming Plan (p.56).

The Theme:  Media squirrels.  Astonishingly, Media is the home of squirrels of three different colors—the usual gray, pure black and pure white!!!  Occasionally squirrels of all three colors can be seen together chasing each other in a yard or up a tree.  The street mural design should incorporate squirrels of all three colors.  It should be simple enough so that volunteers can easily paint in the design with direction from the artist.  The design should be scalable to the dimensions of the interior of the intersection, approximately 32 feet x 40 feet, to be coordinated with the corner/curb treatments at the intersection.

The successful design will be chosen by Media Borough Council after review and recommendation by the Street Mural Committee.  Artists will be notified of Council’s decision on Friday, April 8, 2022.  The successful artist will receive a fee of $2,000, of which $1,000 is payable upon completion of the scalable design, the remaining upon completion of the painting and sealing of the mural.

The artist’s responsibilities will include:

  • Preliminary Design
  • Final Design (after selection)
  • Attend 6 to 10, one hour long, virtual planning meetings, as needed
  • Scale final design to street dimensions
  • Select and assist in locating paint color and materials
  • Plan and supervise the execution with volunteers aged 10 to adult, working in shifts
  • Sketch outline on the street on Friday, the day before event
  • Direction and oversight all day Saturday during the event
  • Be available for rain dates, May 20 and 21

The deadline for submission of the design is 4:30 pm on Tuesday, March 1, 2022.  Designs should be submitted to: ktlux@mediaborough.com.  Submitting artists will be notified on April 8.
