Meet the People of Media: Emily Miller of the Code Enforcement Department

The Code Enforcement Department is responsible for reviewing and issuing building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, dumpster, and sign permits as well as investigating property maintenance, fire safety, and life safety complaints. In other words, they enforce all Media Borough Code.

This important mission is carried out by a small team at Borough Hall. In 2019, Emily Miller joined the team as a part-time staff member to assist Code Enforcement Director Jim Jeffrey. Emily assists with the day-to-day operations of the department, including managing the enormous amount of paperwork. “It’s a work in progress,” laughs Miller.

Miller joined the department after serving on the borough’s Planning Commission for over 10 years. “I’m a civil engineer by trade and have always kept my PE (professional engineer) license current,” she explains. “Working on the Planning Commission was a great outlet for my professional training while I was raising my family. I’m thrilled that it translated into a new opportunity for me when I was ready to return to work.”

Miller credits her background as an advantage in tackling her new responsibilities. “I was always on the other end of the process; developing subdivision and land development designs, performing engineering calculations for stormwater management, representing my clients’ plans at municipal meetings, and submitting the required permit requests. Now I’m on the flip side, reviewing and enforcing them.”

Miller has called Media home since discovering it when she and her husband relocated to the area as twentysomethings.  “It feels like home. I love the sense of community and the sense of belonging that comes with living here.”
